My friend and ex partner bought me out of a Franchise 4 years ago and still cleans a fast food chain famous for roast beef. He had a tech out last night when they were robbed at gunpoint. He had an IPOD on(???) with his back to the door and just kept cleaning until they got mad and hit him in the head. He is ok now but shaken up.

I still clean many restaurants and this has got me a bit spooked. I fiqure keeping the doors secured while I clean will reduce my risk quite a bit. Some are easy to chain but single doors are often tough to secure. Anybody got any ideas? With the rough economy I think robberies are going to become more common.

We had a guy come into a suburban office where we were cleaning and steal a laptop. Good photos of him on the security cams but we paid for the replacement.

There are lots of way to secure doors, if only to make it more difficult for a derelict to enter. One of the easiest is a simple wedge: Hose comes in the door so the door can't be pulled open, wedge under door on the inside so it can't be pushed open. We've built a variety of contraptions out of wood that use long bolts and wing nuts to form a clamp to secure an outward-only swinging door.

Whoever made the lift buddy needs to make a door buddy.

Carrying is the best defense you may have against on the job assaults, but, unless you've grown eyes in the back of your head, you're a fool if you allow yourself to feel safe just because.

some times or most times carring a gun will get you killed

only if you dont go shooting..you must be comfortable with your gun, any hesitation and you are done with..i carry a sig p226 and would not like to be the person thinking that i am scared or not ready to use it.
i would not advise anyone to go get a gun and not shoot it at LEAST once a month.

I'm not trying to turn this into a macho thread where we all puff our chests and talk a good game. I just want to say that I have reason to believe I wouldn't hesitate to kill if threatened, and am reasonably competent with my personal weapon.

It's the dude I don't see coming that worries me.

And, when cleaning, we all are distracted enough to reasonably expect the chance of being surprised by an assailant to be quite high. So, depending on my weapon to protect me is not enough. Having a way to lock the doors, and keeping ourselves aware (and off our radios and cell phones) is a must.

Still need a way to lock the doors ... and still be able to actually clean the carpets. (Encap. cleaning is not always an option.)

very true..we will not send out a truck for a night job with just a 1 man crew. for this and many other reasons.
if we cant make money sending a 2 man truck we wont do the job.

I am surprised that there are those on here that would rather be unarmed when faced with a situation, good lord you can always choose not to use your gun!!!!! its not about being brave infact I think concealed carry laws put a big scare into would be criminals, If I was somehow forced to rob a bank, I would do it in a state that does not allow concealed permits, and if I was forced to do it in my state, the biggest thing that would scare me is an armed regular law abiding joe. the gun I carry is a 2" 357 revolver, I don't view this sort of weapon as an offensive weapon in any way, basically its something to protect myself till I can get something bigger and more firepower, or so I can get to my truck, yeah its capable of taking down someone, but it better be close range, and will depend on the type of weapon the bad guy has.

I don't know if there is a bigger proponent of CCW and gun rights than me, but pay attention to what Mardee said and Odin eluded too.

Thugs don't give overt warning when they strike.
If a thug with a gun "gets the drop on you" you're probably already lost the battle.

There's no shortage of problem people here in Vegas. We've got a driveway alarm in our tm vans. Put the sensor in the entry and move the receiver to an area where you'll hear it. Nobody will sneak into the facility undetected, from there it's up to you and luck.

I've had many opportunities for trouble working at night, I would never wear headphones.

Going into my 10th year in janitorial. Have carried since year 2. If your working nights you have to be alert at all times.
If your running hoses through a door find a way to secure it and bring a helper.
My .40 Glock is like my Amex. Never leave home without it.

I cleaned a bunch video stores for a major chain up till a couple of years ago. I used a tool to keep the single doors open just enough for the hoses to come in. It locked with a padlock from the inside. I'll try and send some info to ya.

Sorry, didn't read past the first few posts... Reminds me of a story. I was getting ready to go through the drive through at the Wendy's (3 or more years ago...) when I saw a man in all black and a ski mask entering. I hesitated... Should I leave? Should I call somebody? Should I continue and go through the drive through? I parked and decided to dine in. I grabbed my Dan Wesson 357 magnum off the floor-boards and walked in the store behind him. He took off his mask and ordered a hamburger. The employees had a good laugh. I guess he was driving a 4 wheeler, it was the dead of winter, and I could tell he got a little thrill out of NOT removing the mask before he entered the store. Nobody ever knew I had a gun or I was ready to shoot him in the back of the head... That's what I call responsible gun ownership. I remained ready but not jumpy or impulsive.

I know everybody is going to stomp all over me and tell me not to play the hero and that's how people die and I should have called the police before trying to blah blah.... so save it. I calmly assessed the situation and made the decision to try to protect the innocent. God gave men certain responsibilities, and one of them is to rise to the occasion when they see somebody weaker in trouble. I'm not going to let some punk hold up a bunch of teenage girls at gunpoint on my watch while I huddle in my car on the phone with dispatch.

Thanks Wiz. The order page is down. Do you know how much? Have you used one? Most of the magers are women. I'm looking at securing the door not only for safety but but to raise the standard of service. After having things secure if another cleaner comes behind me and leaves the door open they won't be impressed.

Problem with carrying is, if the crook gets the jump on you...suddenly HE is carrying.

I'll stick with my SCARS training.

If you want deadly force, you've got a deadly weapon right in your hands when you're cleaning. At close range the vacuum hose can kill. Dead is dead. Or it can be a big distraction; as the mugger is trying to free his balls from the hose you can over power him.

You can carry all the guns you want. But, If your not aware of your surroudings (like our buddy that just got pistol whipped)...Then it wont do you any good.

Maybe its my ADD...but,I always look around wherever I am. I would NEVER wear headphones walking the streets or anywhere for that matter (That's just stupid IMO). I always look for weapons wherever I am, There's weapons EVERYWHERE that you can use.
