Growing old at the wand

I'm 36 and in pretty good shape. I run, lift weights and eat right most of the time.

How long can I count on doing this day in and day out. Another 10 years, 20?? 30 (heaven forbid)? Assuming you don't burn out, how long can you legitimately do the work yourself?

My Dad was in it from 90 to 2002 and got out. Sheer hard work but with the advent of glides and other things, the sheer effort has significantly reduced.

Dad at 61 has just re entered the industry after a 6 year break running a milk delivery business where he was out running from3.30-11 am each morning... carpet cleaning's a pushy job after that!!

Realistically, as long as you want I'd say. If you can achive financial freedom, then you can work as little or much as you want... even if it is just for beer money if you drink or green fees for golf etc.

I'm 34 in March and hope to be able to go a lot longer yet. 11 years so far and loving it. I've seen awesome jumps in the industry just in these few years, I wonder what the next 10 years will bring.

I just turned 56, and push that wand daily. I run a Genesis 59, which ain't no slouch, but I have incorporated glides on all my wands. Some of the bigger jobs I start out on.......I just think I don't want to do this anymore. But after you warm up a few strokes, it comes easy. In fact, I got to keep on my son's asses when they start slackin'!

But....I doubt I could just start carpet cleaning at this age if I hadn't been doing it for the last 30 years.I guess you learn a few tricks as you age in this business.

Is that what that hose is I keep dragging around???

I noticed I don't have to change my Depends so often. I can't tell, I haven't seen it in years and a little shy to ask Helen, Thought it was worms at first!!!

There's an idea. Incorporate a suction tube for the catheter and colostomy bag to the wand. We could even attach all this to a motorized chair. With a good hose boy you could clean into your ninety’s

Sorry this might be due to this great Pinot

I shall make a comment when I get old.

Still take my 2" hose or a scrubber, or both, up three flights of stairs each day.

I hope I still enjoy this game in another 16 years.

I hope the body is still capable in another 16 years.

As John say's, the game has changed big time, it has also got a lot easier, that's why I've put on so much weight.

Ooroo,

Steve T. described you as 5 foot tall, 4 foot wide, solid muscle.

Now Gary, (and Steve T) that's not entirely fair or correct... he's 5'1"

John

To be fair I think Steve did say 5' 1".

However, my friend's wife is 5' 3" tall and I still call her five foot tall.

30 years you'll be 66, a very young 66 if you keep up your fitness regimen. Should be a piece of cake. I fully intend to be doing this another 20 years or more, as long as I enjoy it as much as I do now. I work entirely alone and it's great.

There's a guy in my area that I respect a lot, he's still on the wand (and at a pretty high production number too), and is probably around 60, I think the equipment makes a huge difference.

I'm 52 now, been pushing a wand or pounding a kicker for 30 + years. But I take pretty good care of myself with running and weight training. And no more installation. That work will kill you.

Unless you're a puss, you'll push that wand until you reach whatever age it is where you wise up and figure out how to pay somebody else to do it for you.

I'm 51 and haven't reached that age yet.

I have been doing all my own cleaning for 39 years. I'm 59. I do less cleaning now than a few years ago, but don't need to do as much. So I will just slow down a little as I grow older. Get paid for a little exercise I will need. Semi-retire type thing.

Thank goodness for glides!

You've never been to a MF, Connections or another venue where carpet cleaners gather have you.

You say you are 36, and in good shape.

Search this site for pics of CADs , Connections, Summerfest, Winterfest etc.
The masses are not health nuts, or all that young.

Would that count as dual wanding?

It's just that years of toil can be a heavy burden to carry at times.
